What is the Self?
"Self-as-Organism and Sense of Self: Toward a Differential Conception" is a paper I wrote for The Journal of Ayn Rand Studies, for its Fall 2007 issue. My goal in the paper was to lay out a holistic concept of self, defined as the organism, as perceived reflexively (i.e., from the inside). It's a foundational concept in psychology and psychotherapy that I have found keeps me honest, encapsulating a non-dualistic (i.e., holistic) understanding of mind and body.
A subsidiary purpose of the paper was to criticize Rand's identification of self and mind, a bit of a technical issue but which I linked to other problems in her work, such as her tendency to moralize.
The paper is available from JSTOR.
